Dachau

Dachau was a model camp. Not a model of humane treatment—a prototype. An operating manual written in barbed wire, stone, and procedure.

Its watchtowers, roll-call yards, prisoner classification systems, and guard protocols were refined there and then forcibly installed across thousands of sites throughout occupied Europe. Over 44,000 locations, including ghettos. A scale most history books sidestep entirely.

Today, in Germany, police recruits are required to visit these former camps as part of their mandatory training. Depending on the region, they go to Sachsenhausen, Neuengamme, or Dachau itself. They do not go for a field trip. They go to stand on the same pavement where SS guards once formed ranks. They go to look up at the same watchtowers. I think the bar should be much higher though. Training in the SS barracks really seems kind of "rah-rah". I think the bar should be higher. The ground remembers even when the building does not.

At Dachau specifically, the local police academy now trains in the very same barracks the SS once used. The same floorboards. The same yard. The same architecture designed to strip, sort, and destroy. Germany forces its uniformed men and women to walk those grounds—not to glance at history, but to confront an unflinching truth: a badge, a manual, and a chain of command do not confer morality. The men who ran Dachau were not chaotic psychopaths. They were disciplined enforcers executing a protocol. Dachau is the blood-soaked destination of "just following orders."

If the nation that built this machinery of genocide insists its own cops look directly into that abyss, the rest of us have absolutely no excuse to look away.
